Welcome to our College Comp blog. This will work for both third and fourth blocks. I'll simply use specific entries for each section of the class. So be sure to read the post title to make sure you're responding in the correct area.
Thanks.
For the start of class, watch this video and leave two pieces of feedback. First, list a barrier (or "circle of constraint") that Caine must overcome in order to find his Element. Then explain how he overcame it.
Second, find a connection in the video to a concept from a previous chapter in The Element (this could be Caine finding his tribe, having an epiphany moment, being in the zone, and so on) and explain the connection.
Note - you will need to register with Blogger in order to leave feedback. Some of you may already have done this.
He had a stutter and was very shy before he became famous, but with all the attention Caine has gotten, he has become much more confident which helped him overcome his stutter and shyness.
ReplyDeleteCaine came out of his shell and is doing better in school because he was just being himself. He is doing something he felt passionate about and was going to stick to it whether he had 100 customers or none. Caine didn't set out to build the arcade to gain attention, as a fundraiser, or anything to be noticeable, he just was being his creative self and it worked out very well for him.
I think that Cain's biggest barrier was the social barrier. No one wanted to play his arcade. He was there every day and still everyone that walked in ignored him. I'm guessing many of the people that walked by looked at his cardboard creation as junk. This discouraged Cain. However, Cain's father was a great encouragement to him, and Cain did not want to leave his Element just because he wasn't getting much customers. He kept following his passion. Eventually the social barrier was broken when one man decided to play Cain's game and everyone else realized how great his imagination was.
ReplyDeleteIn the movie, Caine changes because he defeats his barrier of stuttering and not doing well in school. He does this because some random guy off the street helps him and his arcade succeed. The arcade was his passion and because of theTV director helped it became huge. The second thing is this story connects with the Element because Caine is really happy doing what he loves and he got better in school because of it. It shows us that when you are doing your passion then you can get better at anything.
ReplyDeleteIn order to find his element, Caine had to overcome being shy and not having very many friends. He overcame this by spending his time doing something he enjoyed so he wasn't so lonely and bored.
ReplyDeleteI connect this with "The Element" because the author talks about how your friends or family may not agree with what you are passionate about but, someone else, your tribe, will agree with what you are passionate about. For example all it took was one guy to see something in Caine that his own dad didn't see for his passion to explode into something bigger and into something successful!
The personal barrier Caine had to get over was his shyness and stutter. He did this by using his arcade as a sort of meditation.
ReplyDeleteThe social barrier Caine overcame was being an outcast for following his passion. He overcame this by following it even more.
The cultural barrier Caine faced was the idea that kids in America don't know what they want to do, therefore they need someone to tell them what to be interested in. I don't think Caine had that much trouble overcoming this one because his father was already rather open to Caine entertaining himself.
The connection I made between Caine's Arcade and The Element was that Caine seemed to have found a tribe member in the filmmaker. This man pushed Caine to do more than just wait for people to come to him. He also took a bit of creative freedom with the project and did some online campaigning. To me, that is the definition of a tribe member.
One of the things that Caine had to overcome was how shy he was. In order to be in that kind of 'business', you have to be outgoing and able to talk to people easily. By the flash mob happening for him, that really turned things around for him. By him being persistent and out going, he inspired so many people, especially little kids, to be creative.
ReplyDeleteCaine had some hardship to work through. His arcade was in his dad's old shop on a part of town that wasn't visited as much. That in itself is something that most people would give up on, but of course not Caine. This chapter focused in on overcoming things that stand in the way of you being in your Element. Chuck Close for example was losing arm movement, so he started painting with his mouth basically. Caine let nothing stand in the way of doing what he loves, no matter what stood in his way.
1. One thing he had to over come is that when he told kids at his school that he had an arcade they made fun of him. He wouldn't wear his T-shirt that had 'Caine Arcade' on it because they would laugh at him.
ReplyDelete2. Caine could sit at his arcade all day long and not complain about being bored or anything, for that you could tell that Caine was in his 'zone'. He had fun working at his arcade no matter if no one showed up or kids would tease him. He would always make his dad stay there just in case someone would walk by and play his arcade. Time would always seem to fly by for Caine.
One barrier that Caine was faced by was a cultural barrier. Where Caine's arcade was located was not a very popular place in general. The community of people in the location of Caine's arcade were not particularly interested in playing an arcade game made out of cardboard boxes. Most did not take the time to appreciate Caine's creativity until a producer had came into the store. Caine's overcoming of the barrier may be considered an epiphany or luck, but Caine's hard work and persistence was what led him to success.
ReplyDeleteIn relation to The Element, when Caine work on his arcade, he was in 'his zone'. When creating new arcade games and planning how to run his arcade as a business his imagination was at an all time high. He knew what he was doing was something he loved and he was in his element which made working hard and never giving up a breeze.
Caine must overcome the cultural barrier of everyone passing by his arcade. Even though nobody stops to play his arcade, he doesn’t give up. He finally overcomes this when the guy stops for a car part he needs. He buys one of Caine’s fun passes for two dollars.
ReplyDeleteWhen everybody is playing the games in his arcade is when Caine is in the zone. He doesn’t care about anything else except his customers and the games. Also, he has an epiphany moment as soon as he steps out of the car and sees all of his customers lined up to play.
Caine was to embarrassed to wear his Arcade shirt to school because he was afraid of no one would believe he owned an arcade. He overcame this social barrier by the end because now he was less shy and didn't have a speech problem. Most boys his age were probably at home that summer playing video games or playing with their friends. Caine was at his arcade everyday making it better and only hoping to have a customer. He overcame that cultural barrier of fitting in with the norm.
ReplyDeleteCain's biggest barrier he had to overcome was keeping hope for his arcade. He had to tough it out when no one came to his arcade. If he had given up, he wouldn’t have had his first customer, who gave him his big break.
ReplyDeleteThe way Cain relates to the book is that Cain is in the zone when he is running his arcade. He didn’t care when no one showed up to the arcade because he loved doing it so much. He didn’t even care that Jack Black showed up in his arcade. He treated everyone the same.
1. Caine had to overcome the slow business. He worked so hard to build his arcade, and no one comes. Even though there was customers, Caine still goes with his father to work, and continues to build new games. When he sits outside during these long days he would try to persuade the people walking on the street to play. Finally, after many long days of waiting and working, Caine got his first customer. His arcade took off from there.
ReplyDelete2. I think it clear that Caine is in his element. He loves going to his arcade and interacting with all of the customers he has now. Caine's idea to build in arcade in an auto parts store is creative. This shows how imagination and creativity can turn into something amazing. Caine is a perfect example for when Roberts says "Finding the medium that excites your imagination, that you love to play with and work in, is an important step to freeing your creative energies." All it takes is for us to find our passions. Once we do that creativity will pour out of us!
-Caine overcame his shyness and stutter. All it took was people to believe in him and give him confidence. These people are Caine's tribe. They helped him become a better version of himself, and they helped him to find his element.
ReplyDeleteOne barrier that Caine had to overcome were the kids at school. They made fun of him for wearing his “STAFF” shirt and told him that his Arcade wasn’t a real thing. This did not stop Caine from going to his father’s store and making as many games and machines that he could. He didn’t care what the kids said because he was in his element.
ReplyDeleteIf I were to connect Caine with a concept from The Element, I would have to say “Being Yourself”. The biggest point in this subchapter would be that “When people are in the zone, they align naturally with the way of thinking that works best for them.” Caine wasn’t the best in school but when it came to building games out of cardboard boxes, there was nothing that he couldn’t do.
Looking at the videos, I find Caine’s largest barrier to be cultural. Nobody would even glance at his arcade because they’re too busy. Our society has such a go, go, go mentality, I don’t know of anyone who would waste their time at a cardboard arcade. Except for Nirvan Mullack, a film producer from Los Angeles who created the documentary for Caine’s Arcade. He was able to look past his schedule and make time for a creative, passionate kid. Everyone should do that.
ReplyDeleteNirvan arranged for hundreds of people to come play Caine’s Arcade. Caine told his dad, “It was the best day of my life”. Someone was recording the scene when they noticed Jack Black. They went to Caine and asked if he knew who it was. Caine replied that he didn’t care, he just wanted to work at his arcade. He was in the zone, completely focused, and loving every second of what he was doing.
Grant Stewart: I think that when Caine overcame his fear of talking to people it helped him greatly. Before his first customer, he was a shy kid that didn't talk to a whole lot of people but after being that he had to interact with so many customers it just came neutral to him and he didn't think about it. This is like the passage in "The Element" where Lipski didn't do well in school but after he found his true passion he discovered what he wanted to do with his life and a new door opened for him.

ReplyDeleteI think that Caine over came his shyness. Which, I think, is very hard for kids to do now days. Kids are so judgmental towards others that they become afraid to be social. When Caine told his friends at school that he had an arcade they just ignored him and said no you don't. Like the quote out of the Element, "the nail that sticks up gets hammered down." That relates to Caine's life before his friends realized that he had an arcade and how cool it was. Now Caine talks to people all around the world, and he has a 'tribe' with all the kids in the world who enjoy building games with cardboard.
Cain overall began to open up more to the world and It helped him to see the world In a way he could've never imagined. No matter what he held on to the fact that people might be busy and not have the time of day to stop by but he still hoped that one day there would be customers. He overcame rejection and It just made him hope more and finally when his time came It made It worth the wait because life doesn't just hand you amazing opportunities, It's all In how you look at It.
ReplyDeleteI believe can definitely found his tribe. He Is now inspiring people and people inspire him to make new games and develop his arcade into something bigger. He hangs out with people who inspire and support him and I think overall that has made him grow and he will keep growing and one day be something great because of that support and love that people from all over the world has shared with him.
