Turkey Break Assignment

Watch this video and complete the assignment.  I promise you it's worth your time.  I cannot wait to see what you guys think!!!

So in summary, there will be three things for you to do with this TED Ed video.

First, watch the video and answer the "Think" questions.  You can actually answer the questions as you watch the video if you want.

Second, read the two articles under the "Dig Deeper" category and choose one of the prompts to write a one page response on for Monday.

Finally, watch the short video under the ". . . And Finally" category.  Then choose two of the questions to respond to in the comments section of this blog post.

Thanks!

  1. 1. Why do you think Caine doesn't give up?

I think that Caine never gave up because it was what he liked to do and it was his passion. He was determined to succeed. After the first few games weren't attracting anymore customers he came up with and built new games thinking that they would help. He is passionate enough with his arcade that he didn't want all of his time and hard work to be put to waste.

    3. Does Caine embrace "the happy fail"? Why or why not?

I would have to say that Caine does embrace the happy fail. Even after not getting any customers at his arcade day after day, he doesn't give up on it. He still goes to it the next day, sits, and waits for someone to come play at his arcade. He doesn't get mad and destroy it. He just patiently waits until one day, one single customer turned his life and his future around.

  2. 1: Certainly, Caine's breakthrough is a result of luck. However, relate Caine's luck to what Sir Ken Robinson says about luck in the previous book we read, The Element. Review your notes if necessary for this one.
The harder you work, the luckier you become. Instead of Caine making one or two games, and waiting a couple hours a day for a week before giving up, he was sitting there all day! He made about five arcade games, all by himself, and sat in his chair all day every weekend. Because he was willing to work so hard he got lucky with the short film maker willing to film Caine’s arcade.

2: Why do you think Caine doesn't give up?
I think Caine doesn’t give up because it isn’t in his nature. He is a kid, and so many kids bounce back unscathed. At his age he almost doesn’t know what any kind of fail is but the happy fail. And hope is what keeps him coming back. He put time and effort into something he loved doing, so he hopes today, or tomorrow, or the next day someone will come and share his joy that his arcade has brought him.

  3. 1. Caine doesn't give up because he is doing something he loves. He's making new games, taking care of his arcade, and just being a kid. Caine's first customer is also a reason why he never gave up. That customer is one of the reasons Caine had an arcade. His customers is what gives him his business. When all those people showed up to play at his arcade, Caine overcame his little Dip.

    3. Caine does embrace "happy fail." He wasn't getting any customers, but he kept making more arcade games. He was happy doing what he loved even though he was failing in the process. Eventually, he got more customers and Caine's happy fail turned into a happy success.

  4. 1. Caine doesn't give up because he knows what he wants and he loves what he is doing. He has a goal. He is just a kid with a passion. He tries to get people to play his games everyday without much luck. But he never gets discouraged.

    3. I do think Caine embraces "the happy fail". Even though people turn him down day after day, he never gets discouraged. He just keeps trying. And that's what you need to do in order to reach success.

  5. 1. Why do you think Caine doesn't give up?

He doesn't give up because he loves what he is doing and he had a passion for his arcade. He made his goal and he intends to achieve his goal of creating and owning his own arcade. Even though he had experienced plenty of failure, he was still determined to achieve his goal.

2.Does Caine embrace "the happy fail"? Why or why not?

He certainly does experience the happy fail. He experience failure, but he learned from his failure. He modified his games and advertising. He was happy form learning from his mistakes. He welcomed failure, which is rare for a child his age.

  6. 2. How does Caine actually "lean in to the Dip" as Godin would say?

Caine leans into the Dip by creating new games and codes for his fun passes, even though no one's really played his games. He keeps sitting outside and waiting, everyday; improving his arcade in the hopes of eventual success. Caine asks his Dad to help him buy a claw machine and when his dad tells him to make his own, instead of getting discouraged, he makes his own! He taught himself the value of perseverance and patience by holding on when things seemed pointless.

    5. Does Caine become - using Godin's terminology - "the best in the world"?

I think that Caine does become the best in the world, because even though his work is humble, he took what he had and made the most out of it. Caine kept improving, kept building, kept sitting in his chair and waiting to share his love of games with someone. Caine is the best in the world at committing himself to his passions and at being patient enough for his work to pay off.

  7. 1. Why do you think Caine doesn't give up?
I think Caine doesn't give up because as a kid you rarely give up at things, we all usually did something and maybe failed at it but kept going. Like riding a bike we all fell a couple of times learning how to ride it, but we never gave up and we learned how to ride a bike. I think that is a big reason Caine didn't give up and also he just would never stop trying and was very persistent at it. He kept going and going and wouldn't quit.

    2. How does Caine actually "lean in to the Dip" as Godin would say?
Caine leans into the dip by being patient and not giving up. When people aren't coming and playing his game he wasn't pouting. He was making more games and creating things to make his arcade better. He was very perseverant and never stopped or had doubt.

  8. How does Caine lean into the dip?
He sits outside the store and tries to convince people to play in his arcade. Not many people came, but he never got discouraged. He kept cleaning up and dusting. Caine even made his own staff shirt. Caine remains patient though. Sure enough, he gets a customer, and it grows from there.

Does Caine become the best in the world?
Heck yes he did! He was so patient and never got discouraged. He loved arcades and wouldn't let his own fail. Even though it isn't literally the world's best arcade, it's the heart and passion he put into it that matters. He succeeded and met his goals.

  9. 1: Why do you think Caine doesn't give up?

The first reason that Caine doesn't give up is because he is doing what he loves. Even though he didn't have any customers at first, he still loved building the arcade games and the idea of the whole thing. He also likes to make the games more challenging and fun. Another reason that he doesn't give up is because he thinks that his idea will catch on. He knows that once people find out about it, they will love it just as much as him. He just needs to get his idea out there.

2: How does Caine actually "lean into the Dip" as Godin would say?

He persists even when no customers are coming. He doesn't just settle for where he is at even thought the arcade is a great accomplishment for his age. He is constantly trying to make his arcade better. When he hears that one of his games are too easy, he modifies it right away. He thinks outside to box to come up with new games like his claw machine. He also has a staff shirt, prizes customers can win, membership packages, and many other great things that most kids his age would never think of. His hard work pays off in the end, and it will continue to pay off through his life.

  10. 1. Why do you think Caine doesn't give up?

I believe that Caine does not give up because he has a love and a passion for what he does. Even though Caine did not have any customers at first, he was bullied for his ideas and had many reasons to give up, he did not due to the passion that he had for his idea. I also think that Caine has a great role model that his influenced and motivated him to not give up. Despite not knowing any numbers on Caine's dads shop, I do not think he gets a whole lot of business or visitors. Despite this, he does what he can and seems to like what he does. Role models are vital in our lives as they can influence us to make a change that we have been thinking/ not thinking of making. For example, throughout my life, I have thought of becoming a vegetarian. As some would say, I was on the "edge" of becoming one but never found support within my family. This, all changed as a few people (including, Stanislawski) encouraged me to make the change. Ultimately, sometimes all a person needs is an inspiration/ role model to make a change/continue what they are doing.

    5. Does Caine become - using Godin's terminology - "the best in the world"?

To put it delicately, hell yeah I think Caine is "the best in the world." Not only do I think this due to the fact that he is the only person I have heard of making a "cardboard arcade," I also think this because of his passion and grit. When in terms of the dip, Caine was on the bottom longer than most people would be without quitting. I believe that Caine became the best in the world by sticking through the dips and "bumps" he encountered on the way to his goal. Caine is an inspiration to me as he never let others thoughts/action (or lack there of) ruin what he was ultimately on the road to.

  11. Caine is in his element. That is why he doesn't give up. He loves to make the arcade games. Im sure that this boy never knew that there would eventually be hundreds of people lining up to play his games. Caine just simply enjoyed making arcade games out of cardboard. He was going to continue to do it wether or not people showed up to his arcade. And what a great thing it was that hundreds of people showed up and gave this little boy an experience that will last him a lifetime, and possibly forshadow what this kid is going to do in the future.

How does caine lean into the dip? He does not give up. Even when people continuously walk past his arcade, he doesn't give up. He keeps making new games and pouring hours of his time into making these games. How many kids at that age have the desire and grit to keep working at something when it doesn't have the desired result? Well, Caine stuck through the dip and ended up getting what he deserved.

  12. 1. I don't think Caine gives up because he has a passion for what he does. Even though he only gets one customer it brings him so much joy. He doesn't care if he doesn't get any customers, he has fun building the games anyway.

    3. Caine does embrace the happy fail. Even though at first he has no customers and isn't successful he doesn't stop innovating. He is still a kid and has high hopes. If he can make just one other person smile or happy, then it makes his day.

  13. Why do you think Caine does not give up- He does not give up because he is doing something he enjoys and loves. Even though he didn't get any customers at first, he never gave up. He kept trying to get his arcade games better. It was nice to see hundreds of people show up to play his games. He worked hard on the games and didn't give up.

How does Caine lean into the dip- He never gave up. Even when people would just walk by and don't play his games, he doesn't give up. He puts in the time to make more arcade games and to improve his other games. Caine didn't give up and survived the dip and got what he deserved.
